San Francisco International Airport, Terminal 3, Boarding Area E ,
San Francisco, CA
Winner of the IES Illumination Award: Edwin F. Guth Memorial Award of Distinction in 2015, this project, completed in 2014, was designed with Design Director and Principal Melissa Mizell from Gensler. In a space where people’s internal clocks need the most adjustment when traveling different time zones, bld chose to create one of the first circadian adaptive installations in the Bay Area. Prior to tunable white luminaires, a very basic 3 channel LED programmable custom luminaires were designed with Kreon of Belgium to not only simulate each moment of the day’s current color temperature of the sky, but meet Gensler’s minimalistic design intent in the gate areas. Miles of LED tape and extrusions were integrated into the articulated ceilings and skylights to minimize the use of downlights throughout the main gate pedestrian areas.
