Netflix on Vine/ Hollywood, CA

Taking on many identities during the design and construction of this project, bld was initially contracted in 2015 by Kilroy Real Estate as a core and shell project designed alongside Shimoda Design Group (Concept / Design Architect), House & Robertson (Architect of Record) and SkB Architects (Interior Design). On Vine is a mixed-use urban campus on a 3.5 acre site in the center of Hollywood. This project is a harmonious blend of commercial, retail, and production/studio buildings, with a luxury apartment tower with it’s wide walkways and lush landscaped communal spaces situated on a full city block.

Throughout the project, a very large public art monument was conceived, designed and coordinated with the initial design team and DPA Fine Art.

Los Angeles-based artist Maggie West’s photography was integrated into the industry’s first all-metal, photographic sequin mosaic, West collaborated with Jeremy Kirsch of SparkleMasters.

SPECTRUM’s glittering work of hand-crafted kinetic art spans 65 x 17 feet, five-stories tall and is made up of 39,000 powder coated stainless steel sequins. Each square sequin was laser-cut, custom painted and then intricately hung to create a vibrant, eye-catching portrait. (Similar to the old Sparklets trucks) The mesmerizing result, from any distance vantage point, is brought to life using only the power of wind and sun. bld was contracted to design the “after sunset” lighting, which was a challenge to place the 9 projectors on top of 3 buildings without creating reflections and glare. In 2019. Netflix leased the 5 buildings encompassing the 400,000 SF office and production/studio buildings, and a significant redesign was led by IIDA Fellow Collin Burry from Gensler where bld was contracted to design the multiple building terraces and redesign the plaza areas to be tailored to Netflix’s needs. In 2021, the project was complete.
